6 tips to improve driver performance

Do you have to drive often? Or are you responsible for people who drive?

 

Whether it’s the regular hours on the road or driving on an evening, driver fatigue can affect the best of us. And everybody knows the dangers of driving whilst being tired.

 

We feel that it is so important to maintain focus and alertness when driving regularly, that we’ve collated 6 tips to help drivers avoid “highway hypnosis”.

 

1) Take breaks

Let’s start with the obvious one.

Experts suggest that one of the most crucial tips for tackling long road trips is to get out of your vehicle and stretch your legs at least once every two hours. Getting that heart racing doesn’t do any harm.

Planning these stops in line with mealtimes can help with ultimate efficiency too.

 

2) Snacks

Nobody wants to be left hungry during a long drive. That’s why it is a good idea to carry along a variety of vitamin-packed, healthy foods that will allow you to get through the long drive, whilst ensuring you skip the fast-food stops too.

We recommend fruit and nuts, but what is it that you like?

 

3) Stay hydrated

It’s no hidden secret of the importance of hydration in all aspects of life. But for driving specifically, it is important because the more water you drink, the more your cognitive performance improves.

For maximum energy, keep a few bottles of water supplied for the journey.

 

4) Chew gum

Did you know chewing gum is a great way to increase circulation and alertness? It can make drivers feel more comfortable during driving activities too.

In addition – although contradicting with point 3 – if you are out of water, chewing on gum is a good way to quench thirst too.

 

 

5) Use strong scents

Scent can be particularly good at several things, including lowering stress, boosting attraction or keeping you awake.

Peppermint is a good example of this as it is a natural pick-me-up that has been shown to reduce fatigue and increase alertness.

So, when you’re off in a daze, take a sniff for a quick boost!

 

6) Treat yourself to entertainment

Engaging sounds are a good way to help keep the brain active.

What do you enjoy listening to on the drive? The radio? Music?

Audiobooks are a good way to keep your brain lively, but our personal favourite is listening to humorous and comedy sketches. As it is no surprise that laughing keeps us awake.
